Ben on the G-Raam Nashville, TN – Savannah, GA May 10th – May 21st This is my journal of my days of training with Gordo and Clas. When Gordo invited me to come train with them while staying at my place during his early days of G-raam I couldn’t turn it down. Some tennis players would kill to live, practice, eat, play with Andy Rodick. Some golfers would pay big bucks to do the same with Phil Mickelson. I want to swim, bike and run with Gordo. Some peoples idea of a vacation is laying on the beach, taking a cruise, relaxing, not me when I get back from a vacation I like to feel that I need a vacation because I’m so tired so I am taking a few days away from my business and family to train with two of my triathlon heros. I have a feeling that I am going to be talking about this trip for a long time after.
Trip Summary
DAY ONE
DAY TWO
DAY THREE
DAY FOUR
Gordo scheduled as easy day for today. G was up early this morning (5:30) and was making his coffee and working on the computer I had my eye shade and earplugs in and probably could have slept for another hour or so but got up about 6 and had some coffee with G and discussed some thoughts on training. The Baron likes to sleep he calls it recovery and when he is gets his recovery cut short he gets a little irritated so he let Gordo know that maybe he should refine his “trailer ninja” skills in the morning. We rode first this morning with The Baron rolling out first 5 minutes ahead of us the workout was going to be 12 x 30 secVo2 max intervals with a 30 sec recovery. I wanted to stick with G to see how these worked so about 25 minutes in he slows and tells me to maybe ride ahead because he is going to be riding eratic and he doesn’t want me to run into the back of him so I tell him I want see how you do your intervals that’s one of the reasons I’m here I want the best seat in the country to see the G man at work!!! He then pulled over to piss and I took that he didn’t want me around so I just rode steady on my way to Chattanooga. I knew we were only going 60k today and at about 58k I was riding alone and felt like I was really in the middle of nowhere figuring that I was lost I almost turned around and started riding back to this intersection which was about 10k back which I figured was a turn I had missed but then I saw this farmer mowing his yard and he confirmed I was on track the RV park was just 2 miles up the road. Later on we drove into town for a swim in which I set a personal swim record for me - 200 yard butterfly my previous best was a 50 fly so that was a big jump for me.Gordo and I agree the third 50 is by far the hardest part of a 200 fly. I probably would have stopped at the 175 but I saw G on the other end of the pool watching so I knew I couldn’t give up. After swimming Clas and I dropped off G for a massage and we went food shopping at the grocery store. It was great shopping with Clas we had our list of only maybe 20 items however we got 3 – 4 of every item so by the time we were done we had a overflowing shopping cart of fruit, veggies, non fat yogurt, turkey slices, drinks, ice and a ton of other things. The funny thing is this will only last about 3-4 days!!! We also got a Food Lion discount card now we registered as Mark Allen living at 6 Alii Drive, Kona, HI. I finalized my return travel plans today it looks like I will be going home next Wed. from Augusta. I really wanted to make it to Savannah with the crew but my daughter has a big swim meet back home Sat and Sun and our swim coach signed me up for the 800 free and a 50 relay and I really want to be there for that. G also said those final two days would be light so I probably wasn’t missing much anyway being that Clas is tapering for IM Brazil.
DAY FIVE
Last night Gordo must have been sleeping in some funny position or something and was snoring a bit, even with my earplugs in I could here him sawing logs so I threw a shirt that was laying around at him so it would land on his face and maybe get him to roll over or something?? That didn’t work so I then threw a big towel on his face so now his whole head is buried and sound muffled so I can sleep!! He couldn’t figure out why all this stuff was all over his head in the morning and I couldn’t keep a straight face when he started talking about and I had to tell him what really happened. Today was a day I have been kind of dreading- the 20k track workout. The longest track workout I have ever done is probably 10k?? Luckily Molina told G that he should cut it down to 16k. Clas was doing a 30k run tempo run on his own so G and I rode our bikes about 15k to the track and proceeded to get going. Gordo had me do a Aet 2 miles which is about 145 HR for me and I did 6:55 and 7:02 (G did 6:13 and 6:26 at HR 140). Then it was 12 x 600 w/200 recov working on leg turnover.G then gave me some good pointers on my running technique while I finished up my last repeat. It was really humid and we were both glad to be done. While doing a bit of a stretch after I noticed I had a tick on the side of my torso. I showed G and it was funny to watch him immediately start to jump around inspect himself looking to see if he had any ticks on his body. I then told Gordo I was riding to the local 7-11 to get some matches to burn the tick out and I would meet him at the pool where we were meeting Clas to swim. I met those guys at the pool and had Gordo use a match to burn the ticks head out of my skin (your supposed to light a match and then blow it out and stick on the tick so his head comes out of the skin) he did a pretty good job have to admit, he only burned me good once!! We then had a 4000 yard workout in the pool which I still had a bit of the 200 fly in my arms today. After the first 2000 I started feeling really hungry and shaky and cracked a bit. I dug through Clas’ bag looking for food and pounded a apple and 3 gels after that I felt much better and finished the workout, then a soak in the Jacuzzi, after me and Clas headed over to get a massage. The place we went to I think was used to massaging “the average american”.Clas and I were talking after about how I was telling my therapist that most normal people get massage because it feels good and we really don’t get massages for relaxation we like to feel a little pain on the table we are here for recovery. Clas said “ I like it to hurt, I want it to be like a workout” describing his idea of a good massage. Dinner and Bed get ready for another day on the G-Train!!
DAY SIX
Last night was kind of funny Clas is still feeling his way threw the English language and he emails his girlfriend who is American as much as he can. He has this Swedish to English dictionary that we hear him thumbing through trying to get his letter typed so that it makes sense and Gordo and I tell why don’t you just ask us what to type when you have a question? You can only imagine the things we tell him to type that really don’t mean “I love you and miss you very much sweetheart”. In the end he knows that we are messing with him and goes back to his dictionary. After getting packed up we were off for our ride to Cummings, Ga. Gordo told me 190k today with some big rollers in the last 60k. They were also doing 2 x 40 minutes of “steady” which is G’s IM race pace. I sat on Gordo wheel all day. I did do about 15 minutes of “legal riding” which means 5-10 meters back for me (Clas always rides 20-40 meters back). I didn’t want to crack today in the last 60k on the rollers so doing some drafting was the key for me. I had a bit of a food bonk at about 4.5 hrs and told G I needed to stop I have a map and directions I will meet you there. He said “ no way man you got to stay with us” and then gave me the rest of his Cliff Shots and told me “these will buy you another hour lets go”. I sucked down 4 gels and washed it down with a huge swig of cola then bang felt 100 times better the rest of the way. Things I learned while staring at Gordo's ass for 6 hours – - Gordo is very strong, the dude he rolls strong no matter what hills, wind, cars, rumblestrips whatever.. - Gordo is very focused while riding on the front. There is all kinds of stuff going on while riding like huge trucks missing us by 6 inches, carload of girls honking and waving, carloads of rednecks throwing beer cans at us, cool houses and ranches along side the road and Gordo just keeps looking straight ahead again just rolling along steady and strong nothing bothers the dude unless you ride on his wheel on a climb (read next) - Don’t ride on Gordo's wheel while on a steep climb. He says he rides erratic and doesn’t want you to run into the back of him and take him out. - Clas can push a huge gear!!! At one point we were on a very steep roller about 105 miles into our ride, Gordo and I are in our 39x 19 grinding away I looked back and Clas was in his 56x13 sitting maybe turning the pedals at 25 rpm!! Gave me a whole new meaning of big gear work. We ended up staying in a motel tonight because I have been informed that we are doing a sprint triathlon tomorrow at 8am. I would have told you 10 crazy things that I think we might do while on this trip and a sprint triathlon would not have been one of those?? Again Welcome to Gordo World.
DAY SEVEN
The gun went off and Me, Gordo and Clas were the 1,2,3 out of the water, Clas’ weakness is the swim and he was right with us so that meant trouble for anyone wanting to have a chance of winning this race. Clas and I went straight to the front on the bike and put the hammer down with Gordo a little bit back. I thought that I would be feeling yesterdays session in my legs but I guess all that sitting in was paying off because the legs felt alright just a little bit of burn. Clas’ and I got off the bike together I was a little surprised I figured that I would maybe be able to ride with him for a couple of miles but I will take it. We took off for the 5k I had my training shoes on with no lace locks on and both shoes came untied right away so I stopped and retied and got going again not losing much time at all. At the turn around Clas was out front and looking good I was curious to see if there was anyone tailing me. Luckily G was a bit back and I figured I could hold him off which was alright but I was most concerned with the three of us “Team Gordo” going 1,2,3 overall. After the race we met our Athens host Kirk Smith. Kirk is a stud he was only about 3 minutes behind us he was hot on our heels!!! We rode back to the hotel showered then rode back to the race site for the awards then back to the hotel for a drive to Kirks house. Once at Kirks Clas and I took a quick 40 minute nap then off to the pool for an easy 45 minute swim at the University of Georgia pool. Kirk got us the hook up and we breezed right in. When we walked in the pool area I was like Wow!!!! This place is awesome!!! It was by far the nicest pool I have ever swam in. I took a bunch of pictures so I can remember that place. We ate some dinner and it will probably be early to bed tonight. Gordo and Clas are getting massages, When Clas got done with his he was sweating!! He said “that was a good one, a real workout, lots of pain!!” So far I am at about 29 hours of training and racing for the week with one more day to go. Remember this is Gordo and Clas’ “recovery week”. Welcome to Gordo World.
DAY EIGHT
Anyway, Gordo said last night that we had a 7AM departure time. Clas and I slept in the guest bedroom because it was much cooler in the house and we knew that we would sleep better. I gave him the bed because he is faster then me and I don’t deserve it. I deserve the floor with my camping pad and sleeping bag (see rule 10.8 section C in Gordo World rule book). I was up at 6:20 very quietly so not to wake Clas who really likes his sleep I got some coffee down some breakfast down and was ready to go by 6:50. Clas came down about 5 til and said “wheres Gordo?” I told him “I haven’t seen him yet he is probably in the trailer typing on his computer and getting the bikes loaded up for the drive to Cummings?”. Finally we were just relaxing talking with Kirk when we decided to go out to the trailer at 7:45 to find Gordo sleeping like a log!! The dude was out, no eyeshade it was very bright and he was still out 45 minutes after the scheduled departure time. We got him up and we got going within 20 minutes. He forgot a few items back at the trailer but nothing that Wy didn’t have for him (Thank goodness for Wy). Kirk was riding with us today. Gordo, Clas and I were all very excited to get dropped off at the Starbucks in Cummings. Kirk doesn’t drink coffee but he was excited that we were excited I think?? We got caffeinated and then headed off for our 100k ride back to Athens wasn’t 40 minutes when the coffee kicked in and we all had to stop for a bathroom break. Our ride was smooth and steady nothing too fast with G sitting on the front doing his thing. I rode “legal” today which means no drafting. I feel like I am cheating when I draft now because Gordo and Clas won’t draft me when I pull so I shouldn’t either?? We got back to Kirks house and then Kirk took me over to some trails nearby to do a run. They were some great trails along a river. We took it pretty easy since we were both still a bit tired from yesterday’s race. I was getting real hungry toward the end of our run and asked Kirk if there were any good Mexican places to eat nearby and he said yeah right across the street. Perfect Im going to go home, shower and then get a couple of chicken burritos. The past couple of days of training has kicked my appetite into high gear and I haven’t eaten a burrito in a week (also a new PB for me) so Kirk, his wife Jane and I went to the Mexican place and I ordered a “Heavy D” burrito, and 2 “Heavy D” tacos. The guy making the burritos is like “is this all for you?” I said “yeah”. He said “have you ever eaten here before?? Why don’t you just get the burrito and then see if you still want the tacos after, the burrito is pretty large” I told him “I can handle it, I’ll take the tacos” like G says “bring it!!” I killed everything no problem and went back to ask the guy what to do with my empty baskets he said “you finished all that??” then just looked at me like I was messed up. I wanted to tell him buddy Welcome to Gordo World.
DAY NINE
One thing that I have learned on this trip is that I need to eat way more between sessions other wise I totally fall apart halfway through the next session from a food bonk. So I pounded a huge bowl of oatmeal, 3 english muffins with Peanut Butter, a piece of chicken and 3 large glasses of Orange Juice. Clas finally looked at me and said “yeah now you are getting it!”. We rested a bit and headed out for our 105k ride to a State Park on the Georgia – South Carolina border. Gordo left early he wanted to ride alone today because Clas was doing 30 minutes hard pace and he didn’t want to do that with the way he was feeling. I stayed on The Barons wheel until his 30 minutes of tempo and then decided I wanted to try and “stay legal” (no drafting) while he did his tempo I managed to do it with my HR at 155-160 which was pretty good for me. After that was over I was back on his wheel for the rest of the ride. Without the stop lights and slow riding for the one stop we took I would say we averaged 27mph today for our “on” riding over a bunch of big rollers, with a bit of wind as well. We got to the campground where we were staying and ran straight off the bike about 40 minutes. I ran out to the main highway and then across this bridge to the South Carolina State Line. When I got back I said “hey guys I just ran to South Carolina, no problem”. I have been really hungry lately!! When I got back from running I drank 20 ounces of water, 1 strawberry soda, 1 sprite, 1 V8 and 2 oranges. After a shower I ate 2 more oranges, 3 chicken breasts, 30 ounces of water and then a bucket of fruit salad the size of my head. It’s a weird feeling my stomach is full but I am still starving and want to eat more?? Dinner is getting cooked right now so I will probably eat another huge bucket of something before bed.
DAY TEN
Gordo has an Aquathon planned for us this morning. We stayed right on this really nice river and the other side of the river is South Carolina so he wants to swim there with our running shoes and then run to McCormick, SC which is about 10k away. So we put our running shoes in plastic bags and with a little bit of duct tape (a lot of duct tape for Gordo) and used them as pull buoys. Clas had another idea and duct tape his shoes to his back with duct tape wrapped around his entire torso!! My buoy didn’t last long as it started taking on water right away and made it very hard to swim. I was dropped within the first 200 meters and had to work pretty hard just to keep those guys in sight. We swam to this bridge first and then swam alongside this bridge to avoid getting run over by any speed boats. We did see a couple of fishermen fishing under the bridge as we swam by. By that time I had stuffed my shoes into the back of my shorts so at least if my buoy was sinking at least I could kick and one of the guys asked me “is that a flotation device on your ass???” I said “yep it sure is I need every advantage I can get chasing these guys!!”. After that we put on our running shoes and started the 10k run to the next town. Once we arrived there Wyanne was waiting with our bikes. We ate and drank a bit and then headed off on our bikes to Aiken, SC. I was really feeling tired on the bike and rode legal for the first hour with Gordo leading the way but after that I said forget it and did a bunch of drafting the rest of the day. After a short bit of getting lost we found the RV park we were staying at. Unfortunately doesn’t have showers so I got to take my first “Swedish shower” which is you in your swim suit, and a hose. Clas has a good picture on Gordos website of him taking the first hose shower so then we had to rename it the “Swedish shower”. Tonight will be my last night in the trailer. I can’t say that I will miss it all that much but it really has been fun and a cool way to train with these guys. Tomorrow we will be doing the dreaded 20k track workout. I am not sure how it is going to go for me since today I was really tired. But I will give it a try and either way I have a feeling I will be going home pretty tired!!
TRIP SUMMARY
I accomplished all my goals. I felt like I hung in there quite well with the boys giving that they were just coming off of two 45-hr training weeks and are both seem to be very fit?? I guess we will have to see if Gordo says anything in his reports if he thinks I hung in there all right or not? There was a bit more intensity then I was expecting during my stay this most likely due to the fact that Clas was doing his Specific race prep for IM Brazil. I have to admit it did take me a couple of days to get used to the trailer living. I think that anyone would take a bit of time to adjust walking into that. After 3 days though I felt into the groove and didn’t have a problem at all and was actually quite comfortable. Gordo likes his uninterrupted sleep one thing that I will remember is Gordos B.J.O.P.!! It’s old mountaineering trick for avoiding getting in and out of the tent while you are sleeping (I will let him explain). It was really cool to see how seriously these guys take there training. Each session is planned and has a purpose. It seems no matter what happens the purpose of that workout for that day must be achieved even if its raining, flat tires, bad traffic, pool to warm, pool to cold, no pool at all, ect.. While we were running our track workout the final day a guy came out onto the track and started yelling at Clas while he is in the middle of his half marathon test session. Was Clas going to stop?? No way!!! He ran by that yelling guy at 5:45 per mile pace and told Gordo with his Swedish accent “you must talk to this guy!!” Afterwards Clas said “that there was no way that guy was going to ruin his session!!” Another thing that amazed me was how organized Gordo is. Everything is planned out a week in advance training, driving, where to stay, where to swim, where to get massage, where to ride, where to run, where to go shopping and so on. If today is Thursday he is planning out the entire day for next Thursday. I know everyone says that’s how you are supposed to do it but it is very hard to do and very easy to fall behind on planning especially from the road with all the training. This really inspires me to be more organized in my personal life and with my work as well. There was even some talk about a G-Euro next year!!!! I think I heard maybe Portugal to Italy?? Also Sweden to Rome was thrown out there as well. I guess we will see?? I know one thing is for sure that if I get the invite to the G- Euro I will be there for sure!!!! Gordo, Clas and Wyanne -- Thanks for the trip!!!! My new PB’s –
